Another Saturday at Swan Falls Looks Possible!

I'm writing this Thursday morning so I know the forecast will likely change a bit over the next couple days. If it holds, Swan Falls could be great once again! The other variable to be mindful of are the birds. If the birds of prey are active and our presence seems to disturb them we should get out of the air.

Right now I'm looking at the following forecast for the Birds of Prey Area; Sunny, with a high near 69. West northwest wind 7 to 16 mph - weather.gov.

It's possible it could be too strong. Swan Falls is a site I am not comfortable flying with active/thermic conditions. I'm most comfortable there when the canyon below is shaded and the winds are consistent in a glass-off manner. If the RAWS stations look good Saturday, I'd like to be on launch around 6pm. I hope to see others in the sky!

Finding an OLd hg training Site - Initial Point

To the best of my knowledge, Nick Johnson was the first person to fly off a butte about five miles north of Swan Falls/Snake River! The feature is called Initial Point. It's only about a 100 foot butte but it's steep and there's an edge long enough that it's sharable in ideal conditions. You can also land anywhere. The best looking launch is the NW launch. It's a grassy launch on an ideally steep slope. There's also a north launch and also an east launch. The north and east launches have some scattered rock but it's possible to lay your wing out on a grassy patch.

Nick and Joss first launched the north launch. Around sunset we used the east launch where Joss got another flight in and I got in the air myself. Joss and I launched in 5mph winds.

This site is a great pre-game launch to Swan Falls. I'm not comfortable flying Swan with active thermic conditions so Initial Point would be a great place to fly and feel out the air until the shadows get long and Swan glasses off.

April 11th 12th Weekend Flying

Sunday looks fantastic! Thermals climbing 4,000ft AGL+ with Northwest winds around 5mph. Looking to start at a Butte off of Swan Falls road called Initial Point. Afterward, around 5 or 6, looking to head to Swan Falls for a possible glass off. Possibly something like last weekend!
